28mm medieval reinforcements

As I work through my pile of lead, I pulled out these recent additions that I received in a trade. These are older metal 28mm medieval figures.

I decided to paint these up in two different liveries as reinforcements to my HYW French and/or English armies. First up are two bases of pike/spear. These were very nicely sculpted figures which were easy to paint.

There is also a base of blades and a base of bow.

I had an extra figure so I made a general out of him.

Then there were two more bases of spear/pike in a slightly larger size for which I used a blue colour scheme. These figures are a bit smaller than contemporary 28mm figures; I have compared them to GW Bretonnian bow below and they fit is pretty good.

Up next: I have a bunch of 1/72 AWI Americans primed as well as some 28mm Italian renaissance figures. But things will be slow then next week or so as I concentrate on vacationing. Next club night is August 16th and I'll run another War of 1812 game using For Honour and Glory and my new Hotz mat.

FS 28mm HoTT Skaven Army

I have for sale one painted 28mm Hordes of the Things Skaven army. The figures are plastic GW figs from the Island of Blood boxed set plus a few additions. There are about 32 AP here (depending on how you classify some bases). All are based on 60mm frontages with 30mm depths.

There are three bases of spear, including a standard bearer if you wanted to make one base the general. You could also use these as blades if that is more to your liking.

I think the detail is fairly good. Black undercoat, acrylic paints, magic dip. From a pet- and smoke-free home, although imagine how much I could get painted if I had a pet that would paint in exchange for smokes... .

There are also three bases of blades (again, could be spear). There is another stand bearer here if a blade general is your thing.

There is one base of artillery. These were hard to get a good shot of because of how I positioned the figures on the base. But the fellow in the background is carrying a cannon of some sort on his back and the guy in the foreground has a bomb in his hands and a canister of propellant on his back. Likely an artillery piece or a shooter.

This fellow is a hero. I was happy with how the gems turned out on his big stick.

This fellow could be a hero or a magician. I was quite happy with the fire in the brazier that he carries on his back.

There is also this very large rat with the surgically implanted blade. This might be a behemoth or a beast (I think the former) and is much larger than the rest.

Finally there are three aerial bases. You could play these as flyers. Or the middle one could also be an aerial hero. They should give your army some flexibility and mobility.

EWG Club Night August 2

We had eight guys out at the club tonight with three games running.

Dave hosted Jonathan, Chen and Andy in a game of WW2 FUBAR. As I left, the French were pressing home their counter attack, although there was a lot of French armour burning.

Elliot and Kevin played a game of Warmachine; here is one of Elliot's Warjacks. Amazing painting.

Scott played a game of DBHx in which we took a go at Crysler's Farm. I played the Americans and Scott played the British. Had we had average dice, the game likely would have swung in favour of the British. Alas, Scott rolled a lot of 1s and I rolled a lot of 5s and 6s.

Here you can see the Americans moving onto the board, with one command moving forward as a screening force and the other marching tightly formed behind.

I managed to screen Scott's Indians and light troops on my right and mask his cannon and gunboat on my left and push on up the middle.

Suddenly, Scott's luck started to turn and he eventually took apart my leading command, although the price was heavy. I was able, however, to bring the second command into play and push him back off two victory points and eventually we called it as he had no chance to contest any of them.

Overall a pretty good game. The gunboat was rated as a cannon (range of 1000 paces but could move 500 paces at a cost of two pips) and proved an important part of the British game. Not a bad way to incorporate naval assets.

Up next: Some 28mm Skaven are just about finished for HoTT. I have some 28mm metal medievals primed as my next project. Then onto some 1/72 WW1 figures for HoTT. I hope to see the bottom of the paint pile by Xmas!

Norman War Wagon

I've never built a war wagon before for a DBA army. The wagon and oxen came from a trade with Dennis (old Minifigs). The figures are from Scott (Old Glory) and the rider is from Conquest Games. I may add a standard and some more shields to the wagon to make it look a bit more military, rather than the hay cart it is.

Overall, I'm a little "meh" about the wagon. The individual pieces are okay but together they are something of a mess--so many elements on the base it was hard to get a decent snap of it. Anyhow, done is done and I guess we see how this works in a game.

Up next: A 28mm HoTT Skaven army is underway--flesh, hair and metal done--now moving onto their clothes and the details. Nice figures. And I will primer some more 28mm metal medievals this afternoon.

Norman Spear

I have finally brought my 28mm Norman army to completion. These last bases of spear have been staring at me for some time.

These are mostly Old Glory (I think) that I got in trade from Scott. I'm not thrilled with how they turned out (the shields look like fishing lures!) but I am happy they are done.

I have a War Wagon that is drying that I will post-up tomorrow that complete the army. It will have to share a camp with the Saxons unless I get ambitious one day.

Up next: A 28mm Norman War Wagon, some 28mm Skaven for HoTT are being painted and some miscellaneous 28mm medievals are about to be primered.Thereafter maybe some 1/72 AWI--hard to say.

Battlelore: I win for a change...

Jess suggested we pass a rainy evening playing some Battlelore. I chalk this up to reading the Hobbit to her at bed time. Anyhow, out came the game and off we went using one of the basic introductory scenarios.

Jess played pretty well (for a seven-year-old) and managed to put me back on my heels with her aggressive style. I keep forgetting that the optimal move is invisible for her and she tends to simply lash out.

Her she is running down my cavalry with her heavies, followed by another pursuit and beating of my foot. Below you can see her trash talking me, although note the banner count. She took defeat pretty well, all told.

Up next: I am about to base a bunch of 28mm Normans (awaiting the decals drying) and I've started painting on a bunch of GW skaven for a HoTT ratmen army. Nice figures. Crazy prices but very nice to paint and a pleasant distraction from horse and musket. After them perhaps a few more Normans for a war wagon and then I'm not sure what. Maybe some 1/72 AWI. I also have a 15mm zombie commission on the way.

28mm Lions?

I was cleaning out some boxes and I found six 28mm lions. I believe these were from a Samurai army I traded to Scott (hah!) and were part of the fantasy element he wasn't interested in.

So I painted these up. The first base of three would be beasts in HoTT and I've put then on my shelf with the medieval armies.

I think these turned out okay--there is enough shadow and depth to the paint job.

I based the second set of three individually.

These could be used in a superhero or pulp game as wild animals. Perhaps Catwoman's minions?

Up next: I finished painting the remaining 28mm Normans and now I'll move onto decaling and basing them. I also have the war wagon complete and am just working on painting up a few riders to populate it. Then onto some ratmen for HoTT. Jess is also eager to play some more Battlelore--perhaps I'm due to win a game?
