878 Vikings at the club

We had eight guys out at the club this week. Chen and Brandon played a game of Dropfleet (sorry--no pics) while Taylor and Jonathan played from Dragon Rampant.

Scott, Terry, Bruce and I tried out 878 Vikings with Terry and Scott being the axe-weilding invaders and Bruce and I the brave defenders of the realm.

Bruce and I had a bit of trouble with the dice. For example, at one point I rolled three 1 in 27 rolls in a row. And we had some even worse single results. Tough to defend the realm when you guys evaporate every time they see someone in a horned helmet.

Things weren't too bad. The vikings invaded in the north and, slowly, we whittled them down. They also invaded in the south. We were less successful in pushing them back and started to lose reinforcement points.

About an hour in, we were in trouble but still had enough troops to mount and offensive out of the middle.

Then Terry played a really powerful card (a surprise to me as I hadn't read through the cards ahead of time) and evaporated our guys in the middle of the board. Very frustrating.

At that point we were screwed and the vikings sewed up the win a turn later. Overall, a very interesting game. I like the mechanics of these Academy Games but it plays very differently from the Birth of America series. There are fronts that develop. The sides are asymmetrical in many respects. I'd totally play this again with maybe one of the nine (!) expansions thrown in.

EWG Club Night October 2

We had 10 guys out at the club last night and two games ran. My camera battery died within minutes of arriving so I only got one good pick of Dave's WAB game. The gist was that Romans had sacked a German village and were carting off the good when the Germans came back and were very upset. Quite a game that was still going on when I left. Bruce and Terry made a very slick little redeployment as I was leaving, basically pursuing their way out of a really unpleasant flanking maneuver by Dave, Chen and Justin.

Guy, Andy and Eric played my 1/72 War of 1812 Bladenburg game. I wish I had a photo as it was quite a game. The table was 4 feet (east-west) by 3 feet (north-south) with the British force of 14 bases entering in the NE corner. It was immediate confronted by a fordable river running NW-SE. The goal for the British was to cross this river and parallel river midboard to bag some hills in the SW corner and open the way to Washington. We used DHBx and Guy rolled 1d6+1 for pips, losing the +1 bonus the first time he lost a unit.

Erik and Andy played the Americans. There were 23 bases (mostly militia, with a few regulars, dragoons and cannon) and each player rolled 1d4 for pips. I made a few changes to set-up to reflect the confused American command. Each player rolled 1d6 alternately and selected that many bases to comprise their "army" for the game. I thought this would create unbalanced flanks and indeed it did with Erik grabbing all of the regulars and a cannon on his first roll and Andy grabbing all of the dragoons and the rest of the cannon on his roll.

I then had Erik (with 13 bases) set up first with the proviso that there could only be 12 bases between the rivers and the remainder had to be behind the second river. Again, I was trying to exploit the glory-hound nature of gamers and most of Eric's forces were deployed forward while Andy had to deploy back meaning he had to cross the river. Finally, I ruled that any time the Americans both rolled a 1 for pips, they would need to switch commands immediately. This was designed to mimic the political foolishness on the American side and just generally be disruptive.

The game was tense with the Americans being forced to switch commands immediately. Guy moved the British across the river and then ran into the vanguard of both sides, losing six units almost immediately (I thought this was going to be a 15-minute game!). But he dug in despite Andy rolling 18 6's out of 40 rolls for combat. Then the superior British units started to beat back the Americans. There was virtually no cooperation between American players which helped--as did Erik's terrible attack dice.

Guy slowly evened the score and then both sides reached their break point on the same turn. So we played one more round and the British managed to bag the American unit they needed. The outcome was consistent with history but the aggressive American play saw the British bottled up and marching onto Washington over the bodies of the defeated American army. Thanks to everyone who played.

Up next: Some 15mm cavalry are being based, some 28mm skirmishers are being painted then likely back to 15mm cavalry. Next week is round two of the EDBAG HoTT campaign.

FS 28mm Star Wars vehicles

I have for sale five 28mm Star Wars vehicles. I picked these up awhile back as part of a project and have either replaced them or decided I don't need them so I'd like to move them on. All have been washed and based on 60mm frontages. I would expect they would come off their bases with a quick soak to loosen the white glue.

First up are two speeder bikers. These are metal from the Titanium series. The riders are roughly  consistent with the new Star Wars plastics (about 32mm?) that have come out and are a bit bigger than the old WEG Star Wars figures.

There are also two AT-RTs. Again metal Titanium series figures. These fellows are slightly smaller than the guys riding the bikes and match (almost exactly) the new Wizards Star Wars figures.

Finally there is this 28mm AT-ST. This is a plastic vehicle and has nice battle damage painted on it.

I'd like $55 OBO plus shipping (about $15 in Canada or to the US) for the lot. I'm not prepared to break this lot up. Offers to bob.barnetson@shaw.ca.

15mm AWI Dragoons

Working away on a commission, I finished some 15mm AWI dragoons (Philadelphia Light Horse).

These are Minifigs. I've never had a very good impression of Minifigs after I traded for a bunch of ancients. But perhaps the ones I had were old sculpts or the molds were worn. These were great!

The owner will need to add his own standard.

I also finished painting a dwarf with cannon ball (donated by Josh a long time ago) to finished this dwarf cannon.

The club is having a silent auction to help cover our gaming costs so I think I will donate a painted 28mm dwarf HoTT army. This might help raise some funds and encourage someone else to get into this scale.

Up next: Some more 15mm AWI are primered and have the flesh done. I have also got some 28mm HaT El Cid heavy Spanish infantry underway. A bit thin for 28mm and with annoying ring hands and brittle spears. But a good price and I think they'll paint up just fine.

28mm Skeletal Hordes

I based up some of the skeletons I have been painting these past few weeks. I've come to like the idea (if not the reality) of hordes in HoTT and skeletons seems like the perfect hordes army--anything to bring back some stands foolishly lost, I guess. So, 50 some skeletons later, I have seven bases.

There are a couple of different versions of GW skeletons here. Some tomb kings, some vampire counts, some very old (and slightly smaller) skeletons and then some I simply cannot identify. These have been trades from a variety of gamers (thanks to Scott and Tim especially).

I did a couple of bases with a few guys half-emerged from the ground to reflect the fact they will all be reincarnated a lot under my command.

I also did a magician. He started out as a vampire count. I then added a cloak and green-gemed staff. The, I built up a lectern out of skulls and blue stick-em and then added the book (vinyl floor tile). I'm pretty happy with him.

I also did a base of lurkers. I picture the guy on the right yelling (in a Mr. T voice) "Sue-prise suckas!"

Up next: Some skeleton cavalry and shooters (the last of these guys, I think) and some medieval knights. Then some more medieval foot.
