WW2 Pictures in The Journal

Bruce, Mike and I recently had a comparison of WW2 rule set run The Journal of The Society of Twentieth Century Wargamers entitled: Measurement, Area or Horizon: A comparison of company-level WW2 rules.

A volunteer effort, the production values in The Journal can sometimes make photographs a bit unclear. I though posting up the colour version of the pictures might be useful.

These are all 10mm models from Pithead.

The buildings are all 6mm structures from Timecast (with plinths from Baccus) as are the hedges.

Up next: Some more rebased AWI and, when I finish the painting, some more 15mm Saracen cavalry.

Space Marines???

One of my wife's friends is interested in gaming and popped by today to try his hand at painting. We managed to knock off six Space Marines (thank Chen!) this afternoon.

I think he did a pretty good job for his first time!

We also knocked off an Armourfast Sherman in about 4 minutes.

I also continued my rebasing of my AWI fellows. I've completed 30 bases of regular British units, with only the cannon, cavalry and Indians left.

Then onto the Americans (who are just now coming off their bases).

One type of unit I haven't shown before are the five British Loyalist regiments I did.

These fellows are quite nice and painting green was a pleasant change from red!

Up next: More rebasing and some more 15mm Saracens are on the paint table.

Rebased 6mm AWI

I've started the rebasing of my remaining 6mm troops--all of the AWI fellows. I started with the Grenadiers and decided I would keep with three ranks because I liked the looks of it. I see some of these fellows are sticking grass in their caps to camouflage themselves... .

These are, of course, Baccus figures. I retired my Adler grenadiers because they just couldn't cope with the handling the figures got in play. I need to get another base or two of these fellows from Peter once I figure out which strips I'm short.

I also put together two bases of light infantry. The flag pole is bare because I need to make up or order some new, probably smaller, flags.

I did these fellows in ranks of two because (1) that worked out with the number of figures I had and (2) I thought the lights might be prone to fighting in a bit more open order.

And here is one of the six or so bases of regulars I did the other nice (only 20 or 30 more bases to go!).

Again, the base needs some flags to finish it up. I'll do those when I get to the end and know how many flags I need.

Up next: Some more 15mm Saracens hit the workbench next week. And I'll continue with the rebasing.

15mm Bedouin

I finished up another bunch of 15mm figures for a friend's Saracen army.

These fellows are Bedouins from legios-heroica (an Italian company, not French as I previously posted).

They are nice figures--a lot of depth, good join between horse and rider and no flash!

Up next: Some rebased 6mm AWI Brits for MayDay and another project I've got cooking. Thereafter, some more 15mm Saracen horse and some more 15mm AWI Brits!

Games Night: February 2

We had 12 guys out last night with four games running. An excellent turn out on a snowy winter's night.

Elliott, Matt and Kevin played a game of WarMachine, I have no idea what this is about but the figures they had were fantastically painted and they seemed really into it.

Justin Chen, Dave and Russ played a game of Command Decision 4 (not your father's Command Decision!) using Justin's 15mm figures.

This looks like a good game and had not yet reach conclusion by the time I left. Nice to see some WW2 out on the table again!

Scott and Dave faced off in game 3 of their WAB campaign.

I believe Dave won, although Scott's ploy of pinning Dave's troops with bow-firing rabble and then charging home with his Norman knights looked like a hell of a good idea.

They also managed to get in a game of Basic Impetus with Scott's Macedonians facing down the might of Rome.

Bruce kindly brought out the second of four sets of Nap rules we're trying: Napoleon. I think the set was a loaner from Dave (thanks!). A pretty book but an ugly game! Chris and I played the Russians against Bruce's French command.

There were several difficult to grasp rules (better to face cannon in column than in line?) but Bruce did a good job of umpiring a bad set of rules. The picture above shows a Russian unit in disarray (lots of party hats!) which subsequently rally, destroyed one unit of heavy cavalry and then pushed back the other. At least it was dramatic.

15mm Gulham Archers

I finished some more 15mm archers as part of the saracen army I'm painting for a friend.

This time up there are three bases of Gulham archers. Nice figures but could have used one more pose.

I might have gone a bit too bright on these fellows and will pull back slightly on the colours when I do the Bedouin that are presently on the paint table.

I'm keen to get at the riders where I can add pennants and a bit of motion.

Up next: 15mm Bedouin! And I'm soaking a bunch of 6mm AWI British off their bases to start rebasing for my MayDay game.

15mm Turcoman Archers

I picked up a bit of painting work for a friend in Ontario and, with my ear infection on the retreat, I've just churned out the first units.

These are 15mm Turcoman archers for his Saracen army. The figures are made by Legio-Heroica in France and are quite lovely.

These were two-part figures (riders and horse). Virtually no flash and nice fit. Some of the other figures require gluing on shields and spears which was less fiddly than I thought it would be.

I think they took the paint quite nicely. The various sources i used showed them to be a mix of bright colours (especially the tack) and drab colours (homespun linen and wool?). I tried for a drabber, more middle eastern base than usual. They are based on standard DBA bases, although David intends to use them for Shattered Lances.

Next up: Some armoured Guhlam mounted archers. And I need to start rebasing 6mm AWI figures for MayDay.
