Random GW dudes

I spent most of the holiday season outdoors so not much painting got done. I did finish these two GW dudes for a friend.

They are huge and I imagine that is somehow important in the GW universe.

Nice enough figures and I'm happy to have them done and off my painting table. Next up: Some Star Wars Imperial Assault figures.

Finishing up old projects: Harry Potter

As the year winds its way to an end, I'm working on clearing off some old projects. A few weeks ago, I finished some Harry Potter figures and decided to give them an outdoorsy base.

I was happy enough with the results that I decided to go back and give the rest of the figures a similar treatment.

The integral bases on these are large and oval. They were too difficult to remove so I originally just painted then grey, which sucked.

The grass and sand is better, even if it doesn't really make a lot to sense given how much of the action was indoors or for the Winter Ball figures.

Oh well!

Up next: Absolutely no idea.

Last of the Harry Potter

I finally finished the last of the Harry Potter figures I bought years ago from Metal Magic. These guys have been staring up from the edge of my painting desk for ages.

Even after stripping off the factory painting, the figures were pretty so-so. But the only other range I have seen is from Spain in resin and cost the moon. These are about 40mm tall.

They have an odd, oval-shaped integral base that proved too bothersome to remove. I have been painting it a simple grey and it looks yucky so I decided to just texture these. I was happy enough with the outcome that I'me going to go back and redo the bases of the other figures.

Up next: Some very old Trek figures, including a couple of 1970s Scruby figures!

Job lot of sci-fi

I'm on vacation this week and trying to be outdoors so only a few figures to show. First up is a mech guy Terry 3-D printed and gifted me.

This guy is big (28mm Pulp Figure archaeologist for scale, also new). I'm not sure on the scale of the print--not quite 54mm. Probably most useful as a sci-fi terrain piece statue?

I also knocked off a 54mm Mr. Spock. I see I slopped some gold braid (#$!*&^$) so will need to go back and tidy that.

This completes my TOS crew (I also have a different Kirk and a Pike, not show).

Up next: Some more 3mm WW2, I think.

Clone Wars Monopoly Pieces

Continuing my tour through sci-fi Monopoly figures, this week I painted up some figures from the Clone Wars monopoly variant. I haven't watched this TV show but the figures seem to be faithful enough to the cartoon.

There are six figures in this set (four Jedi and two Sith). On top, we have Anakin, Obi-Wan and Ashoka. Below we have General Grievous, Captain Rex, and Ventress. These metal figures are pretty cartoonish, with elongated limbs and minimal detail.

The figures are huge. I've compared the two Grievouses I have (right from the Saga Monopoly game) and the Clone Wars figure is about a third bigger (based on limb lengths).

Below, I have compared the various Jedi I have: left to right we have West End Games 25mm Kenobi, Clone Wars Monopoly Kenobi, Rawcliffe 42mm Qui gon Jinn, and 32mm Saga Monopoly Kenobi.

Overall a fun paint but of little utility for gaming so likely these will end up for sale.

Some furniture and Darth Maul

Just a quick painting update today. I finished off some terrain I bought at Red Claw in January.

This is WizKid stuff: a guillotine, and iron maiden and two stocks. All scaled for 28mm figures.

I also finished of a 40mm Darth Maul to match Qigong Jinn (who I painted before Xmas). I've no idea where these guys came from (job lot of sci-fi on eBay, I think).

I'm not sure happy with how Darth Maul came out, but whatever. He's done and on the shelf.

More Ghostbusters

I finished up a second batch of ghouls from the Ghostbusters game. These fellows all got a fleshy treatment.

I also finished off a long-neglected Cthulhu mini from RAFM that I think I got from Chen (some kind of undead dragon?).

And I painted a 40mm Qui-Gon Jinn that I got from somewhere. Weird scale, but I have a matching Darth Maul who is next on my list.

Up next: Some superhero action from the club and then back to the ghouls.

42mm Toy Soldiers

One of my regular painting clients makes his own wooden toy soldiers. These are roughly 42mm figures and he sent me a batch to try painting.

These fellows represent a militia unit thus their uniforms are... errr... not uniform. Beyond blue coats and not too uniform, I was left to my own devices with a sample figure.

These were an interesting painting challenge. There are relatively few features to the figure so much was painted free hand. Also, the surfaces involved are huge, in the context of most toy soldiers. I had to find some larger brushes in my collection to get decent coverage. These took roughly three times what 15mm figure would take, but I'm guessing I could get the time down with some practice.

Although the figures look simple, there is a surprising amount of detail to paint. The faces took me a while to figure out. Some of the jackets were prepainted with what I think is an oil paint which did not play nicely with my acrylic cross belts. But in the end they turned out alright.

My daughter quite likes these. They have a quaint, throwback feel to them. I cannot believe Dale hand-made each one. The arms are fun felt but the rest is wooden.

Up next: Some 15mm WW2 Germans are crying out for paint. With the weather about to turn cold, I expect should have them done this week. I also have some 6mm Naps I need to prime. Then back to my own projects with trees and perhaps some 1/72 AWI British in the offing.
