28mm Skeleton Hordes

Well, actually blades or maybe spears, we'll have to see what makes sense when my copy of HoTT arrives. But I did manage to get 20 figures off the painting bench on the weekend. As I await reinforcements, I am cooking up a few more.

The command stand was pre-assembled by the last owner so all I did was paint and base.

I went with green after experimenting with a couple of different themes, including a washed-out mismash. I think I will do a mismash for the hordes stands but assumed these elite skeletons would be a bit more orderly with uniform colours (a household guard, perhaps).

Overall, these figures have nice details front and back. I believe they are plastic GW Tomb Kings. I have a couple of extra sprues that I'm fiddling with now to make a couple of magician types. Maybe with flowing robes and whatnot.

There are some nice shields in this set.

I did some wet-on-wet blending to get some interesting colour patterns.

I think they scale nicely against these Wargames Factory Romans.

Up next: I have assembled and primed the last 28mm Romans I need to complete the Marian/Polybian army so those will get painted soon. I am also working some magicians/heros for the Tomb King army. When a box arrives from Tim, I will put together some shooters, knights and riders--depending on what is in the box. By then some more 15mm commission work should have arrived.

  1. Reinforcements on the way!

Those look great, Bob! They don't really look like the GW Tomb Kings I have seen...

When I read the title I actually thought perhaps you were doing hordes... Should have known better. Nobody does hordes. Everybody seems to want to play with stuff that... y'know... doesn't suck.

  2. Yet I think some hordes would be cool--very undead, recreating reinforcements as needed. But, of course, hordes do suck some! Shooters seem to really rock in HoTT. Looking forward to some more skeletal pals.

  3. A bit of sleuthing suggests these are Vampire Count troops! Good to know. But skeletons are skeletons! Bring out your (un)dead!

  4. If ever I get to doing my own undead army I WILL have Hordes. I have Hordes for my Orc and Goblin army too. I don't care if they suck. They're the "right" thing to have.

It's like building a Early Libyan DBA army and deciding that all that psiloi "suck" and deciding to field them as blade from then on...?

We use the unofficial/semi-official tweak for Bow and Warband (reduce Bow movement to 200 paces, and increase Warband movement to 300) Seems to balance things out a bit better.

The unit/stand type I really love is the riders - it's the best of Light Horse (500 pace movement) and Cavalry (+3 vs everything, quick killed only in bad going).

  5. Looking wonderful mate. The swirling patterns in green are really tasty.
If you're after more cheap undead that look great, check out the Mantic line. The undead are easily their best line.

  6. Ben,

Thanks. I was looking at Mantic's elves when I'm feeling a bit richer! I will check out their undead--do you have a sense of how they match the GW figures?

  10. They are GW skeleton warriors from the Vampire Counts range. Here they are: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/armySubUnitCats.jsp?catId=cat1530123&rootCatGameStyle=

    Hope I helped!

  11. They seem a bit tall, I've heard that Wargames Factory Romans are shorter? That picture shows them the same height as the GW Vampire Counts Skellies. So are the Legionnaires smaller or same height as these Romans?

  12. And yes, man thats some awsome paint jobs. :) Id love to face em with my hordes army I have back home, but sadly Im deployed right now.

  13. Robert: Thanks for your note. The Wargames Factory Romans are pretty normal height; it is the Warlord Games plastic EIR legionnaires that are a bit short. Hurry back home! Bob

  14. Hehe will try to man. Lol. Maybe we can set up a few games sometime. You do really good paint jobs, do you commission work?

  15. Robert. I do a bit of commission painting here and there when someone is interested and it is something I cam competently do. 54mm are likely out of my league!

  16. How much is your commission work? Might be interested in hiring your painting skills. lol... I can pain but I have a huge amount of guys I just dont have time to paint right now.

  17. Probably easiest to deal with this by email (bob.barnetson@shaw.ca); rates depend on what you want painted! Typically in 15mm I charge $0.80 per foot and $1.60 mounted or vehicle including basing. For 28mm, I typically charge $2.00 foot and $4.00 mounted, but depends on what it is.
